Leading local technology accelerator, Moringa School, today awarded the inaugural Kenyan Coders Tuition Scholarship to Wilstan Enock Onditi, one of the best science students in last year’s Kenya Secondary School Examinations.
The scholarship program was officially launched in December 2018. The first scholarships targeted high school students who sat for their KCSE in Nairobi County. Of the ten scholarships for 2019, half are designated for students living in informal settlement areas around the city. Moringa School is looking to roll out this scholarship across the country in the near future.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Nelly Agyemang-Gyamfi, Senior Access Manager at Moringa School said, "Inclusivity is something that is key to Moringa's operations. In order to reach our goal of transforming Kenya and eventually, the continent, it is important for us to break down the barriers to quality higher education. Amongst other initiatives, we are breaking down said barriers through this partnership with the Kibra Constituency to provide full tuition scholarships for the best STEM students to learn the technical and soft-skills needed to be world class software developers.”
The six-month scholarship is aimed at providing the beneficiaries with software engineering and professional skills that form the foundation for pursuing specialized ICT programs in universities across the world. Additionally, the students will be exposed to practical coding and soft skills that are key to today’s software development industry.
Ken Okoth, Member of Parliament, Kibra Constituency commented, "We are delighted that the Moringa School, known for producing young Software Developers, has chosen to invest in our students. This Scholarship is an excellent launch pad for our best students as they prepare to launch their tech careers in universities locally and internationally.”
On completion of the six-month program, the beneficiaries are expected to have learned the fundamentals of programming among other web development skills.
