Road deaths are rising, with almost 1.5 million people killed in 2016
globally in road accidents. In Kenya, in the last one week alone, over
75 people have lost their lives in multiple accident.
Pressure
has been building on road designers, carmakers and technology providers
to tackle the rising number of fatalities that occur from sometimes
distracted drivers. In some instances, old age has been attributed to
road accidents orchestrated by decline in physical and cognitive
capabilities.
Old people with over 70 years and sometimes young
people under the influence of alcohol are more likely to make driving
errors in which they failed to correctly judge speed or the distance
between their vehicle and another. In such instances, smart technology
such as enhanced safety features and crash avoidance technology helps
make older drivers meet their daily transportation needs.
As it
has become clear that eradicating accidents by means of vehicle passive
safety efforts alone is becoming a challenge, research and development
of systems for preventing accidents through road-vehicle cooperation and
vehicle-vehicle cooperation have come in handy and more intuitive
innovation is underway to enhance their effective use.
LG
Electronics has emerged as one of the front runners in breaking barriers
to design innovative technology to prevent road accidents. LG’S
Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) can help drivers of all ages
make better decisions, increasing road safety for all. The system has
smart camera that collects traffic information accurately responding to
the surrounding environment in real time.
The system can also
detect objects from a distance and even apply autonomous emergency
braking if a collision is imminent. Its advanced lane keeping assist
technology allows the car to stay in its lane while maintaining a safe
distance from other vehicles.
“As LG, we believe that innovation
and right technology such as Advanced Driver Assistance System could
greatly reduce traffic accidents. There is a lot of investment and
harnessing of technology that is going into our efforts to ensure we
realize safety on our roads.” Said LG East Africa Marketing Manager,
Moses Marji.
When fully implemented, ADAS will make it possible
for drivers both old and young to perform better while lowering the risk
of vehicle related injuries.
